Peking University, founded in 1898, was the first national comprehensive university in China and the highest educational administrative organ in China at that time. It was renamed as 19 12 after the Revolution of 1911.

19 17, the famous educator Cai Yuanpei became the president of Peking University. He "followed the principle of freedom of thought and adopted the principle of inclusiveness" and carried out fruitful reforms in Peking University, which promoted ideological emancipation and academic prosperity. Chen Duxiu, Li Dazhao, Mao Zedong, Lu Xun and Hu Shi all worked or taught in Peking University.
