(1) The original work is based on Shakespeare by the River (1974 and 1997 editions); Zhu Shenghao's translation is based on The Complete Works of Shakespeare (version 1947) published by World Bookstore.
(2) A brief introduction of the translators and proofreaders of this book is as follows:
Zhu Shenghao: A Talented Translator of Shakespeare's Works. After graduating from Zhijiang University in Hangzhou, he joined Shanghai World Bookstore as an editor. He translated most of Shakespeare's plays under extremely difficult conditions. He died in 1944.
Qiu Kean: I graduated from Zhejiang University in my early years, and then I did research work at Oxford University in England. He used to be Counsellor and Senior Expert of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, Vice President and Professor of Ningbo University.
He Qishen: Ph.D., Kent State University, Professor and Vice President of Beijing Foreign Studies University, President of China English Literature Society.
Lin Shen: Master and Doctor of Shakespeare College, University of Birmingham, UK; Professor, Central Academy of Drama, folger Shakespeare College, Washington, USA.
Gu: Dr. Peking University, Professor of English Department of Peking University, Director of Shakespeare Research Center. Sun Fali: He graduated from the Foreign Languages Department of Wuhan University in his early years. He was a graduate student at Central University and later became a professor of the Foreign Languages Department of Southwest Normal University.
Suo: He graduated from the Department of Western Literature in Tsinghua University in his early years, and has been a professor at Tongji University, the Foreign Languages Institute of the People's Liberation Army and Fudan University.
Liu Bingshan: Graduated from Chongqing University, now he is a professor of Foreign Languages Department of Henan University and director of Shakespeare Research Center.
There are many Chinese versions of Shakespeare, but as far as language is concerned, only Zhu's version is the most vivid and wonderful, which is almost universally acknowledged as unparalleled. Mr. Zhu Shenghao's knowledge of China classical literature, coupled with foreign language literacy and poet talent, is no longer available. Therefore, although Zhu's understanding of the original text is not perfect in some places, he skipped the words he thought were "indecent" in the original text and did not translate all the works (there are only 27 scripts in the 47th edition), so we decided to choose Zhu's translation. In order to make up for the deficiency, after being authorized by Zhu Shenghao's descendants, we invited domestic experts to make a comprehensive revision of Zhu's translation (non-proofreading, proofreading is a technical work, proofreading is an academic work, which are two different things), to correct mistranslation and make up for the missing translation, so as to make it as complete as possible and as close to the original as possible. This work is both important and arduous. Experts include Qiu Kean, He Qishen, Gu and other top Shakespeare experts in China. Their study of Shakespeare, their understanding of international research results, and even their faithful translation of slang and foul language in the original text all add a lot of color to the translation. Historical plays are retranslated. Shakespeare's plays were just confirmed by the international Shakespeare circle at that time and translated in time, but these plays had not been translated in China at that time. There is no need to revise the new translation. In addition to scripts, there are a lot of poems in Shakespeare's works, and we also include them all, not selected ones. Translators Professor Sun Fali and Professor Gu are both masters of Chinese studies. Therefore, the complete works of Shakespeare by Yilin Publishing House are the real complete works. In fact, some published complete works of Zhu Shenghao's translation deceive readers, because Zhu has not translated all his works (there are only 27 scripts in the 47th edition), and he has not been authorized by Zhu Shenghao's descendants to modify them.
This set of books has two characteristics: one is "complete" and the other is "new". It is said to be "complete" because it contains 39 plays by Shakespeare, his long poems, sonnets and other lyric poems, including Two Noble Relatives published by 1974 riverside edition, Edward III just accepted by 1997 and a long poem, plus fragments of Sir Thomas More. It is said to be "new" because it absorbs the new research results in proofreading and translation in the international Shakespeare field, and also restores words and paragraphs. Those that were considered "indecent" were deleted to preserve the original appearance of Shakespeare's works as much as possible.
