Chongqing University (CQU for short), located in Chongqing, a municipality directly under the Central Government, is a national key municipality directly under the Central Government and a university directly under the Ministry of Education. It is one of the famous "Old Eight Schools of Architecture" in China and the first batch of key universities in the "2 1 1 Project" and "985 Project". It is also the "20 1 1 plan", "kloc-0/1plan", "Sino-Russian engineering university alliance", "excellent engineer education and training plan", "excellent legal talent education and training plan", "Chongqing university alliance" and "national postgraduate project of building high-level universities" all over the country.

The major was founded in 1929, renamed as National Chongqing University in 1942, adjusted its departments in 1952, and became a national key university in 1960.
