Wuhan University of Science and Technology, formerly known as Wuhan Institute of Chemical Technology, was founded in 1958. In 2002, the school was renamed Wuhan University of Science and Technology. As a full-time undergraduate institution of higher learning, Wuhan University of Science and Technology is affiliated to Hubei Provincial People's Government, with 14 colleges and 1 independent colleges, mainly covering engineering, science, management, literature, law and education.

Wuhan University of Science and Technology is one of the selected universities in the "Basic Capacity Building Project for Universities in the Midwest", a "double-class" key university in Hubei Province, and a university implemented by the state "11plan", the Ministry of Education's "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Plan" and "New Engineering Research and Practice Project" (Excellent Engineer Education and Training Plan 2.0).
