Beijing Normal University is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education of People's Republic of China (PRC) and jointly established by the Ministry of Education and Beijing. It ranks among the national "double first-class", "985 Project" and "2 1 1 Project", and is one of the first ten universities to be built in the Seventh Five-Year Plan and the Eighth Five-Year Plan.

The school's predecessor was Shi Jing University Hall, which was founded in 1902. 1908 was renamed as Shi Jing Excellent Normal School, with independent organizational system. 19 12 was renamed Beijing Normal University. 1923, the school was renamed as Beijing Normal University, becoming the first normal university in the history of China.
193 1 year, 1952 Beiping Women's Normal University and Fu Jen Catholic University were successively merged into Beijing Normal University. 1959, identified by the central government as the first batch of national key universities. In 2002, it became one of the first six universities with the right to set up undergraduate majors independently.
