Soochow University is now Suzhou University. Soochow University is the first western-style university in China. It was founded by the American Christian Council in 1900. Its predecessor was Boxi Academy in Suzhou, Gongxiang Academy and Shanghai Chinese and Western Academy. Soochow University is the first university to offer professional education in law (Anglo-American law), the first existing school in China to offer postgraduate education and award master's degrees, and the first university to establish periodicals. The first headmaster was Sun (American). 1927, Yang Yongqing was elected as the first president of China.

Soochow University has three colleges: Literature, Science and Law. The College of Arts and Sciences is located in Tianci Village, Suzhou, and the Law School is located in Kunshan Road, Shanghai. There used to be Chinese Department, History Department, Economics Department, Politics Department, Social Department and Education Department in the College of Literature. The Faculty of Science used to have departments of physics, chemistry, chemical engineering, biology and physical education, as well as pre-medical, pre-theological, chemistry, biology and biomaterials. Law school used to have a law department, an accounting department and a law research institute. The academic system is three years of preparatory course, four years of undergraduate course and one or two years of postgraduate course, and the credit system is implemented. The school has determined that Chinese is a compulsory course for students, paying attention to scientific experiments and English teaching. The quality of teaching ranks among the best in universities across the country. The affiliated schools of Soochow University include Suzhou No.1 Middle School, Shanghai No.2 Middle School, Huzhou No.2 Middle School, Wuxi No.4 Middle School, Songjiang Bible School and more than 20 affiliated primary schools. For more than half a century, Soochow University has trained many famous scholars and celebrities.
1952, the College of Arts and Sciences of Suzhou University, the School of Culture and Education of Southern Jiangsu and the Department of Mathematics and Science of Jiangnan University merged to form Southern Jiangsu Normal University, which was renamed Jiangsu Normal University in the same year. He runs a school in the former site of Soochow University and owns the archives of Soochow University. 1982, the school was renamed Suzhou University and its English name was restored to Soochow University. Soochow University in Taiwan Province Province and Soochow University have the same ancestry and are sister schools to each other.
