Founded in 1954, the school was formed by the merger of Shanghai Institute of Light Industry, Shanghai Institute of Metallurgy, Shanghai Institute of Chemical Technology and Shanghai Institute of Spice, which were national demonstration higher engineering colleges under the former Ministry of Light Industry.
