The predecessor of the International Open University of Macau (AIOU) was 1978, the first East Asian University in Macau. 1988 was restructured into a public university of macau, and the open institute of east Asia was established. 1992, with the approval of the Macao government, the Open University of Asia in Macau was jointly established by the Open Institute of East Asia and the Open University of Portugal. The establishment of the Open University of Asia has a pioneering historical position in the history of Macao's higher education development.
