Inorganic chemistry teaching

Shen's greatest contribution is in the teaching of inorganic chemistry. He is one of the chemists who have taught the basic course of inorganic chemistry for the longest time. He is good at summing up teaching experience, absorbing new achievements in the development of inorganic chemistry, constantly updating and enriching teaching contents, writing, translating and publishing more than 60 volumes of inorganic chemistry textbooks and monographs,150,000 words, which has contributed to the construction of teaching materials. Shen took the lead in carrying out scientific research on metal hydride in China, and his achievements were highly valued and praised by colleagues at home and abroad. He synthesized and studied a series of ionic metal hydrides, including complex hydrides of boron and aluminum. Three main hydrogen storage alloys were synthesized and studied, and the synthesis and structure of several amorphous hydrogen storage alloys were preliminarily studied. In the synthesis of ionic metal hydride, he creatively used cheap metal sodium as reducing agent to form sodium hydride dispersed with metal chloride as inert salt, and then obtained new hydride through negative hydrogen ion exchange. This synthetic route avoids the use of expensive lithium metal and has low hydrogenation temperature. Later, he improved the synthesis method with condensed aromatic hydrocarbons and titanium tetrachloride as the catalytic system, and synthesized a series of composite hydrides at a lower temperature. Many of them are important synthetic reagents and high-energy fuels, and they are basic research with good application prospects.

Shen believes that hydrogen energy will play an important role in the future energy composition. Hydrogen storage alloys are often indispensable in the development and utilization of hydrogen energy. He synthesized nickel-based and iron-based hydrogen storage alloys by precipitation reduction method, and magnesium-based hydrogen storage alloys by displacement diffusion method, which made the chemical synthesis method of hydrogen storage alloys systematic, and the products obtained were often more uniform, easier to activate or more active than those obtained by metallurgical method.
