Central South University was formed in April 2000 by the merger of Hunan Medical University, Changsha Railway Institute and Central South University of Technology. The former Central South University of Technology was formerly known as Central South Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, founded in 1952, and the former Hunan Medical University was formerly known as Xiangya Medical College, founded in 19 14. It is one of the earliest institutions of higher learning of western medicine in China.
Central South University is located in the famous historical and cultural city of China, on the banks of Xiangjiang River, at the foot of the majestic Yuelu Mountain and on the banks of the surging Hunan River, with elegant environment and pleasant scenery. It is an ideal garden for study and research. The school has 30 secondary colleges, including Xiangya Hospital, Xiangya Second Hospital, Xiangya Third Hospital and Xiangya Stomatological Hospital, and enjoys the reputation of "Southern Xiangya".

In June, the Graduate School of Central South University was approved by the Ministry of Education.
