The school's predecessor was Taihang Industrial School, which was the first ordnance school of our party and army founded by the Eighth Route Army General Command in Taihang Anti-Japanese Base Area 194 1. Known as "The First School of People's Ordnance", it was renamed north university of china in June 2004 after Taiyuan Institute of Machinery and North China Institute of Technology.

North university of china ranked China ABC University 152 in 2023, and China University of Soft Sciences ranked 183 in 2023.
