Yancheng No.1 Middle School was founded in 1923, formerly known as "Yancheng Junior Middle School". It was founded by Zhao Jingzhi, a famous revolutionary educator entrusted by Chen Yi. It is the first public middle school in Yancheng area, numbered 1990, and the first batch passed the evaluation and acceptance of key high schools in Jiangsu Province.

In September 2008, the South Campus of Yancheng No.1 Middle School (No.6, Xihuan South Road) was completed and put into use. The school is divided into two campuses: north and south. On February 20 10, due to the westward extension of Yulong Road, the north campus was demolished as a whole, and the school moved to the south campus. The original site is now Yulong Road Experimental School in Yancheng City.
