The school was founded by the departments of mining and metallurgy of six famous universities in China, such as Beiyang University and Tsinghua University, 1952. Formerly known as Beijing Institute of Iron and Steel, 1960 was renamed Beijing Institute of Iron and Steel. It is one of the first 22 universities in China to set up a graduate school. 1988 was named University of Science and Technology Beijing. Now it has developed into a high-level research university focusing on engineering.
By the end of 20 17, there were more than 25,000 full-time students, including undergraduates 13663, postgraduates 10433, 985 foreign students and 239 postdoctoral students. It has formed a multi-level and relatively complete talent training system, and has a rigorous teaching staff.
Since its founding sixty-six years ago, the school has gradually formed a fine tradition of "rigorous study style and advocating practice", and trained more than 200,000 talents of all kinds for the society, most of whom have become the pillars and backbones of the national politics, economy, science and technology, education and other fields, especially metallurgy and materials industry.
Party and state leaders Luo Gan, Liu Qi, Xu, Huang Mengfu, Fan Changlong, Guo Shengkun, Liu Xiaofeng, etc. all studied in the school. Another 38 alumni were elected as academicians of China Academy of Sciences or China Academy of Engineering, and a large number of alumni took up leadership positions such as governors and mayors. A large number of alumni have served as the chairman or general manager of China Zhong Yi, Angang Group, Baowu Group, China Aluminum, China Minmetals, Sinosteel Research and China Gold. This school is called "the cradle of steel".
