First of all, I want to say that the Brotherhood is definitely not a bad society with the nature of underworld. Don't guess and define just because Chinese translation is strange. Going to Greece is actually one of the shortcuts for China students to integrate into the American circle. To tell the truth, it is not difficult to come to the United States to study in a university and mix with China people every day. It must feel very comfortable. After all, everyone speaks Chinese.
But personally, if you want to really learn a country's civilization, you must understand their culture. Greek system is a unique culture of western universities, which allows you to further experience the colorful university life of foreigners. Going to Greece can force you to speak English with Americans, which can improve your oral English. Why not?
Sometimes, a person should bravely step out of his comfort zone, not only for innovation, but also for challenge. If you are always content with the status quo, you will never make progress. The reason why I write this article is to encourage foreign students from China to take an active part in club activities in American universities. Every time someone asks you, why do you want to study abroad? Many people will answer, because education in China is cramming education. But when I arrived in America, I went home every day except attending classes and going to the library. This 3. 1 minute life lacks fun and challenges. Going to college in America means trying new things. If you want to achieve great success in America, you must learn the American way of life. Next, I will introduce why Go Greek can change your precious four-year life in an American university.
Every fraternity has different principles. Each fraternity has different purposes and meanings, which forms the diversity of brotherhood. Each fraternity has its own rules, guidelines, standards for accepting new members and core views. For example, many members of PIKE ((π κ α) are muscular men. In their view, the four most important principles are scholars, leaders, athletes and gentlemen. If you are not interested in this, it doesn't matter, you still have many choices. Every university basically has 50+ chapters. If you are interested, you can go online to learn about the key points of various organizations, and you can always find a fraternity that suits you. Each fraternity organizes some social services and other campus activities.
Brotherhood can be roughly summarized into four types:
1. Social parties, social gatherings,
2. professional brotherhood, professional association,
3. fraternity of honor, academic honor association,
4. Serve the Brotherhood and the Conference.
Next I will introduce them one by one. The four types are not in conflict, but each type can only choose to join one fraternity. I have a friend who attends both social meetings and professional meetings. Four years in college have been very good.
Social fraternity
Social Frats are the kind of social parties you often see in movies. You go to parties every night and have a crazy party. Social gatherings are usually associated with sorority girls, alcohol and parties. Social fraternities have their own special fraternities, and all kinds of high, theme parties, wild parties and beer table tennis will be held on weekends. I won't say how high it is. You can go to one or two parties organized by them when you have the opportunity. In a word, a frat party is when you think you've finished the night and they come back and start the party. It can be described as brightly lit.
In fact, this kind of life may be very desirable for China students entering American universities for the first time, but I want to remind you not to forget your purpose of studying in the United States. A casual search on the Internet will reveal many bad rumors, such as an accident at a fraternity party. And there are many temptations, and it is possible to go astray. They spend a lot of time on the carnival every week. If you are not sure about your self-control, I suggest you look at something else. Of course, I also have many social friends who can get up the next morning after getting drunk and continue their studies as if nothing had happened. However, such people are a minority. Generally speaking, the average GPA of social gatherings is the lowest among the four, but their activities are indeed the most colorful. There is no good or bad, just see what you value more. If you value expanding your contacts, after all, manpower is productivity. Then I strongly suggest you hurry. (I'll talk about it next)
Professional fraternity
Professional associations are usually based on the career prospects and goals of their members. Usually co-ed, mixed. Professional associations are divided according to the fields you want to go to in the future. Professional associations are also divided into four fields: medicine, business, law and engineering. Professional clubs can cultivate students' professionalism, increase their sense of social mission and improve their social skills through strict training. Generally speaking, professional clubs can give you a clear sense of direction before you graduate from college and have a more thorough understanding of your future career planning. Personally, I think that only with clear goals can we have the motivation to learn and know what to do every day to arrange our time and energy more effectively. I want to mention two famous business professional associations, Alpha Kappa Psi(AKψψ) and Delta Sigma pi (δ σ π). They are the students who sometimes wear formal clothes at school.
In these two brothels, you have the opportunity to meet like-minded friends. There are many students who want to study business, but not all of them can break down into specific fields, such as marketing, finance, trade, consulting, or start a small company to start their own business. By attending professional conferences, you will have the opportunity to learn more about these business areas, so that you can find your own way, have an internal network and internalize some internship opportunities. If I hadn't experienced those trainings, I probably didn't even know that I was interested in finance, more specifically, investment banking. I won't spend time and energy in the school community to take on positions that let me play my role, plan fund-raising activities, improve my resume, spend time sending emails to arrange interview opportunities to improve my improvisation and expression skills, find my first real internship opportunity on LinkedIn, expand my professional contacts outside the school, learn from their successful experience and improve myself. Learning these workplace experiences should be done sooner rather than later. By the way, I'd like to dedicate a famous saying from Forbes to all the friends of business students. It's about who you know, not what you know.
Remember, when you graduate, you will step into the shopping mall, relying on relationships and ability to do things. For example, if you want to win a project, you go to tender. Even if your design and proposal are the most perfect of all, if your competitors are familiar with the project director, you will definitely not get the project.
Honor society
Brotherhood of honor (aka. Honor society,) translated into honor society. This kind of society usually has extremely high academic requirements when accepting new people. The two most famous academic honors are Tau Beta Pi and Phi Beta Kappa. It can be understood as "the gathering place of top student". They only choose those with high GPA, at least 3.65 or above, and the top 20% of the grade, and send invitations.
According to Liao Zhouyi, a senior in our grade, if you want to enter the Tau Beta Phi-UCSD chapter, you need to complete three categories of *** 15 (1 hour 1 minute), and each category needs at least 3 hours. Among them, Reach may be to teach children about engineering, to feed the homeless in the city, and to help orphans in neighboring Tijuana, Mexico.
Academic activities allow you to attend information meetings of various companies, give counseling, have dinner with professors, attend engineering seminars and visit local companies. Socialization means playing and hanging out with other members or future members. In addition, you need to submit a personal statement, two letters of recommendation from professors and attend an interview. You can think of these projects as opportunities to exercise your ability, thus proving that you are not only academic, but also fully equipped with other social skills.
Service fraternity
Service fraternity, service club, coeducation, mixed gender, focusing on community service, leadership activities and fund-raising activities. The famous one is α φ ω (α φ ω). In their view, the future career, grade, grades and ideas are not important, what is important is to cultivate students' spirit of contributing to society. They often go to cat and dog adoption homes, orphanages, nursing homes and places where people are needed in society to volunteer, so as to repay the society. Of course, members will also get together with a bunch of people to play.
Membership steps:
Rush->; Accept the bid->; Pledge-> Initiation ceremony.
Rush week: the first two weeks of each quarter, the first class of school. The old members of each club will send posters and notes at school, inviting you to participate in their activities, with the main purpose of discovering new members. If you are interested in any club, you should take part in their activities more. Rush week had activities every day that week. This is your chance to give full play to yourself. Don't be afraid. The more activities you take part in, the better. Talk about them and see if these brothers who live with you day and night conform to your life values and personality. If the more members you know, the deeper your impression will be, so congratulations, the greater your chances of being invited to join.
Bid: It's an invitation. There is usually an interview before the invitation is sent out, but their review will not be too strict. If you receive the invitation, congratulations, you will have the opportunity to become the newest member of that club. But … don't be too happy, the fun is yet to come. You can choose to accept the invitation, so congratulations on entering the next round, the test of hell. If you choose to give up this opportunity, it doesn't matter, you can come back at any time in the future. After all, people's thoughts change with time.
Pledge: the most difficult assessment period. At this time, you will assign many kinds of tasks to do. For example, hold a large-scale speech independently with your swearing-in class, organize a business activity, steal underwear, break into the girls' dormitory to take photos with them, push-ups, eat ice cream on an empty stomach until the next day with toothache, and so on. Generally speaking, it is a test of your determination. If you don't want to continue in the meantime, you can always give up. They won't care too much. Swearing is crazy, but you can really learn a lot through these tasks and get to know all the members, including sworn brothers.
Most importantly, you will be assigned to a big brother who will take care of your old age. Big brother is equivalent to a mentor. If you get along well, you may help you for a lifetime. In addition, some old fraternities will "fool" you because you are a rookie until the day you successfully join the club. The joining steps and tasks of each club are strictly confidential and will not be disclosed to non-members, thus making the whole program more exciting and interesting. A semester's oath, a lifelong brother.
Membership: If you advance to this round, it will prove that you have completed all the tasks and the final exam. Congratulations on becoming a full member. You can enjoy the treatment of membership. You can finally get a coat with Greek letters on it and become an active member of frat.
Well, in a word, joining the club is not easy. Some people may ask, why should we participate in such a complicated situation? Because these experience challenges add a few lines to your life experience. You can not only get in touch with the unique western university culture, but also learn a lot of knowledge that can't be learned in textbooks, learn how to allocate time in an orderly way, and make a group of good friends. Most importantly, you have proved yourself that you can stand the test no matter what difficulties you encounter.
Anyway, it doesn't matter whether you join the club or not. No matter how you choose to live your college life, it will be the most unforgettable four years in your life. Of course, this will also be the last stepping stone before you enter the society, so we should redouble our efforts. In the future, your children will ask you about your college experience. I hope you can have a lot of rich experience to tell them, instead of just reporting your GPA for four years. Four years passed quickly, so we must cherish the time with our friends.
If you have a dream, go after it!
Come on!
