In September 2003, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, Zhangjiakou Medical College, Zhangjiakou Normal College and Zhangjiakou Agricultural College merged to form Hebei North College.
The predecessor of Zhangjiakou Medical College was the Shanxi-Chahar-Hebei Bethune Health School, which was established in 1945. 1982 was upgraded to an undergraduate college with the approval of the Ministry of Education and named Zhangjiakou Medical College. Zhangjiakou Teachers College was founded in1956; Zhangjiakou Agricultural College was founded in 1923.
