Northwest Normal University is a key university jointly established by Gansu Provincial People's Government and the Ministry of Education. It is also the national experimental base for collaborative innovation of teacher development, the construction base of teachers' morality and style of the Ministry of Education, and the national language and writing promotion base. The school is located in Lanzhou. The current party secretary is Zhang Junzong and the principal is Liu. The motto of the school is "fully understand your skills and keep your purpose unchanged".
As of March 2022, the school headquarters covers an area of 834 mu, the new campus covers an area of 54 1.8 mu, and the ecological training base covers an area of 2,272.5 mu, with a total planned construction area of 997,900 square meters. There are 26 secondary colleges (65 departments and 3 teaching departments), 3 Confucius Institutes, 1 national and local joint engineering laboratories, 1 national research institutes, 1 key laboratories of the Ministry of Education, 1 strategic research bases of the Ministry of Education, 6 research centers of the Ministry of Education and 5 key laboratories of Gansu Province.
There are 7 key research bases of humanities and social sciences in provincial universities, 5 new think tanks in provincial universities, 3 provincial collaborative innovation centers, first-class doctoral programs 1 1, professional doctoral programs 1, 30 first-class master programs, and two disciplines master programs 1 (excluding first-class subject coverage points), and majors. There are 2 national key disciplines, 1 provincial discipline 1 1 and 36 provincial key disciplines.

By April, 2022, the school had 2,537 faculty members, including 362 full-time senior titles, 828 associate senior titles, 822 doctoral degrees and 9 15 master's degrees. Among them, there are full-time teachers 1650, 323 professors (researchers) and 635 associate professors (associate researchers). Doctoral supervisor 182 (including 29 off-campus part-time tutors) and master tutor 1506 (including 654 off-campus part-time tutors).
National talent title winners and projects were selected 69 times, and provincial talent title winners and projects were selected 204 times. The school has hired more than 200 well-known experts and scholars at home and abroad as distinguished or part-time professors. Famous professors, such as li jinxi, Yuan Dunli, Dong Shouyi, Li Jianxun, Hu Guoyu, Lv Sibai, Kong, Chang Shuhong, Chen Yong, Huang Zhou, Peng Duo, Guo Jinxi, Li Bingde, Jin Baoxiang, Jin and Nan Guonong, have taught in the school successively.
