Southwest Jiaotong University has three campuses: Xipu, Jiuli and Emei, covering an area of more than 5,000 mu.

Southwest Jiaotong University is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education, which is jointly established by the Ministry of Education, China Railway Corporation (formerly the Ministry of Railways), Sichuan Province and Chengdu. It is the first batch of research in China focusing on "2 1 1 project", "985 engineering advantage discipline innovation platform", "1 1 plan", "201plan" and "excellent plan".

The school was founded in 1896, formerly known as Shanhaiguan Beiyang Railway Institute. It is the first engineering institution of higher learning in China, the birthplace of higher education in civil engineering, traffic engineering and mining and metallurgy engineering in China, and one of the two earliest sources of Jiaotong University. Known at home and abroad as "Tangshan Jiaotong University" and "Tangyuan". Comrade Mao Zedong inscribed the name of the school. The school is named Tangshan Jiaotong University, Tangshan Engineering College of Jiaotong University, China Jiaotong University, Northern Jiaotong University and Tangshan Railway Institute. 1964 moved to Sichuan, and 1972 was renamed Southwest Jiaotong University. In the course of 12 1 year, three winners of "Two Bombs and One Satellite Meritorious Medal", 59 academicians at home and abroad and 24 national engineering survey and design masters left the school. Mao Yisheng, a famous bridge expert, is an outstanding representative of graduates from Jiaotong University. I have been teaching in this school for a long time and have served as the principal of my alma mater for four times.

There are three campuses in Xipu, Jiuli and Emei, covering an area of more than 5,000 mu, with more than 50,000 teachers and students. There are 25 colleges, 2 affiliated hospitals, 2 graduate schools in different places (Qingdao and Tangshan), and the school's "Mao Yisheng Library" has 7 million volumes (4 million paper volumes).
