Kunming University of Science and Technology was founded in 1954, when it was independently established by Yunnan University Institute of Technology, the predecessor of Kunming University of Science and Technology.

Kunming University of Science and Technology is the Department of Mining and Metallurgy of Donglu University, founded in 1925. 1954 left Yunnan University and was renamed Kunming University of Science and Technology.

1995 In February, Kunming University of Science and Technology was renamed Kunming University of Science and Technology.

1999 10, Yunnan University of Technology merged into Kunming University of Science and Technology.

The school's Lotus, Xinying and Bailong campuses are located in downtown Kunming, where the seasons are like spring, covering an area of 1.800 mu. Chenggong Campus, which has been put into use, is located in Chenggong University Town, Kunming, covering an area of 3,200 mu. The school has 24 colleges and 2 teaching departments, 79 undergraduate majors, 56 correspondence stations all over the country, and 72 evening universities and correspondence majors. There are more than 22,000 full-time undergraduates and more than 7,000 doctoral and master students. The Chengdu Military Region of the Chinese People's Liberation Army has set up a "reserve officer selection and training office" in the school. At present, 500 national defense students are studying.
