Hujiang University, founded in 1906, is the first missionary university registered by the government of China. Tongji University, 1907, formerly known as German Medical College, is one of the earliest seven national universities in China. Established in the Republic of China, these schools are well-known universities in Shanghai and West Shanghai.

Huxi is the west of Shanghai, north of Wusong River in Putuo District and west of Shanghai-Hangzhou Railway in Changning District.
