Tsinghua University School Motto
Tsinghua University's school motto is: strive for self-improvement, be virtuous and carry things.

Tsinghua's school motto comes from a speech entitled "Gentleman" made by Liang Qichao in Tsinghua University in the winter of 19 14. Liang Qichao used two images in the Book of Changes to inspire students: "Heaven is healthy, gentlemen strive for self-improvement" (dry divination) and "rich terrain, gentlemen carry things with morality" (Kun divination). He pointed out that a gentleman's ambition is like the movement of a celestial body, full of vitality and vigor. He should not suffer from the cold, should not advance with the benefits, and retreat when he is killed. Instead, he should emphasize self-victory, abandon selfish desires, be resolute, patient and brave, avoid difficulties and obstacles, and strive for self-improvement; At the same time, a gentleman should be as thick as the earth, be lenient with others, be strict with himself and treat others lightly, absorb new civilization with a broad mind and shoulder the heavy responsibility of history.

"Self-improvement" and "morality-oriented" have become two well-known idioms. The former represents vigorous, diligent, positive, higher, farther and stronger spirit of struggle; The latter represents the spirit of submission, responsibility, tolerance, practicality and hard work.

Self-improvement is strength, and virtue is literature; Self-improvement is yang, and virtue is yin; Self-improvement is the way to pursue ideals, and virtue is the principle of actual implementation; Self-improvement represents the nature of the heavenly father, and kindness is the virtue of the tunnel mother.

Tsinghua School, the predecessor of the school, was founded in 19 1 1. Tsinghua's school motto "Strive for Self-improvement, be virtuous and carry things" comes from a speech entitled "Gentleman" made by Liang Qichao in Tsinghua University in the winter of 19 14. 191410/in June, Liang Qichao gave a speech in Tsinghua, and inspired students with two images in Zhouyi, namely, "Heaven is strong, gentlemen strive for self-improvement" (dry divination) and "The rich in the earth, gentlemen carry things with great virtue" (Kun divination). At the same time, a gentleman should be as thick as the earth, be lenient with others, be strict with himself and treat others lightly, absorb new civilization with a broad mind, improve our society, promote our politics, and shoulder the historical responsibility with a generous morality. Liang Qichao's impassioned speech deeply inspired the students in Tsinghua. Later, Tsinghua University's motto was "Strive for Self-improvement, Be Virtuous and Carry Things".

Liang Qichao had a soft spot for Tsinghua and sent his children Liang Sicheng and Liang Siyong to Tsinghua School. Both of them became world-renowned masters. At the same time, Liang Qichao himself is very concerned about running schools and the growth of students in Tsinghua. What he is obsessed with is the cultural roots of students studying in the United States. He once said: "In addition to Western learning, Tsinghua students should also learn Chinese studies; Gai Guo Xue is the foundation of the country and has made contributions, especially to non-Chinese studies. " He appreciated the "purpose of cultivating all-round talents and strengthening national strength" and the "educational policy of studying in Germany and constantly striving for self-improvement" put forward in the articles of association of Tsinghua University. In fact, in the first ten years, Tsinghua University has been established as an ordinary preparatory school for studying in the United States. Students enter the Tsinghua campus, mainly learning English and some European and American cultural knowledge, while the traditional culture in China is relatively weak. 1925 February, under the auspices of President Cao Yunxiang, the preparatory office of Tsinghua University Institute of Chinese Studies was established.

Previously, Hu Shi, who is famous for advocating vernacular Chinese, suggested that President Cao adopt the tutorial system of Song and Yuan Academy, learn from the graduate schools of foreign universities, and set up a research institute with academic papers as its special research method. President Cao was deeply impressed by this. First, Wu Mi, a 32-year-old celebrity who was born in Tsinghua and returned from Harvard University in the United States, was invited to take charge of the preparatory office of the Institute, and asked Wu Mi to hire one by one with his own letters of appointment. Soon, Wang Guowei and Liang Qichao, famous academics, and Zhao Yuanren and Chen Yinque from abroad were successively hired as professors. These are the "Four Professors" or "Four Mentors" of Tsinghua National Studies Institute, which shocked the academic circles all over the world, spread widely and had far-reaching influence. Tsinghua University spared no effort to hire "four great tutors" to teach in our school. A remarkable feature widely praised by later generations is that they attach importance to real talent and practical learning, do not respect false reputation, and do not believe in diplomas.

Among the "Big Four", only one holds a doctorate certificate from Harvard University in the United States, while Wang, Liang and Chen Dou do not have a doctorate, a master's degree or even a bachelor's degree.

Liang Qichao's title of "Doctor of Literature" was given by Yale University in the United States after he taught at Tsinghua National College. After sixteen years abroad, the young Chen Yinque traveled around Harvard, Berlin and other famous universities in Europe and America, but finally failed to get a dr. zhang diploma. He is learning knowledge. Many years later, Wu Mi once said with emotion that Chen is knowledgeable and versatile: "Not only is he knowledgeable, but he also knows the inside story of Chinese and Western politics and society ... Over the years, he has inspired and taught many people in China's literature, singing and poetry."
