Brunei University has six colleges and a foreign language center. The six schools are: School of Business, Economics and Public Policy Studies, School of Social Sciences, School of Science, School of Medicine, School of Islamic Studies and School of Brunei Studies. Most of the teachers in Brunei University come from overseas, mainly from Britain and Australia, and there are also many teachers from neighboring Singapore and Malaysia. Teachers in Brunei University are divided into five levels, from high to low: professor, associate professor, senior lecturer, lecturer and teaching assistant. The teachers in Brunei University are different from those in China. If you want to be promoted as a professor, you need to work in this school for a long time before you can apply. Therefore, although many teachers have very high academic level, they can only be associate professors. Most of the teachers in Brunei University are doctors, and most of them are doctors from famous British universities. Being able to gather such excellent teachers is inseparable from the high salary provided by Brunei University. Of course, both the government and schools are committed to improving the proportion of teachers in the country.
Brunei University implements a two-level faculty system, with administrative work as the main task. There are registered assistants and four or five clerks under the dean, and there is no division of departments. Educational administration is the responsibility of the department, which has only one dean and the rest are teachers, which is consistent with the low proportion of administrative staff in Brunei University itself.
The class here is naturally small, sometimes four or five people will start classes, usually a dozen or twenty people, and the seats are around the classroom, with the teacher standing in the middle and in front.
I don't want a fixed textbook. Teachers often distribute seven or eight main textbooks and give more than a dozen supplementary books for students to borrow and copy in the library. The price of a textbook in a bookstore is quite amazing, equivalent to three or five hundred yuan, even for Brunei students. The library also helps to print some textbooks, which costs about 100 yuan.
Brunei University also implements the credit system, but only gives 2-4 credits according to the importance of the course. 2 credits and 4 credits are the same, basically all courses are two hours a week. Different from China, almost every class will be supplemented with a tutorial every week, mainly because students prepare their own handouts, go to the stage to explain a theme, and the teacher supplements the comments, giving points as usual, accounting for 20% of the total score. In addition, attendance and homework (small homework) each account for 10% of the total score, and the final exam accounts for 60%.
If my English is as good as that of local students, I will feel that the course is relatively simple and I don't have as deep theoretical knowledge as domestic universities.
Regarding the examination, take the Department of Policy and Administration where I work as an example. The examination form is mainly essay questions, giving several questions and writing articles respectively. The examination time is 3 hours per class.
The bachelor's program of Brunei University is a four-year program, with two semesters each year, the first semester is from August to 65438+February, and the second semester is from June to May, each semester is 18 weeks, including teaching 14 weeks, half-way vacation 1 week, final review 1 week and exam 2. Take two days off every Friday and Sunday. The reason why it is not Saturday but Friday is that Muslims need to go to church for collective worship on Friday. The master's degree lasts for one to two years.
