Hunan University originated from Yuelu Academy and was founded in 976. After the changes of Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties, it has always maintained the continuity of culture, education and teaching.

1903 was transformed into Hunan higher education institutions; 19 12 was renamed as Hunan Normal University; 19 17 was renamed Hunan institute of technology; 1926 was named Hunan university; 1937, became the Ministry of Education of the country.

1949 changed to Hunan University.

However, 1953 was changed to Central South Institute of Architecture and Engineering, and 1958 was changed to Hunan Institute of Engineering.

After the founding of New China, Li Da, the representative of the first National Congress and educator, was appointed as the first president of Hunan University in New China, and Comrade * * * personally wrote the name of the school.

In 2000, Hunan University and Hunan University of Finance and Economics merged to form a new Hunan University.
