The school was founded in 1954, formerly known as Kunming University of Science and Technology. 1995 was renamed Kunming University of Science and Technology; 1999 The former Kunming University of Science and Technology merged with the former Yunnan University of Technology to form a new Kunming University of Science and Technology. On February 28th, 2004, 65438, Yunnan Analysis and Testing Center was registered and established.

Kunming University of Science and Technology is a provincial key university with the combination of science and engineering and multidisciplinary development. It was established by the Yunnan Provincial People's Government and the National Bureau of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense. It is a national key discipline project, a key construction university under the "Basic Capacity Building Project of Central and Western Universities", and a scholarship institution for international students in China. It was selected into the excellent engineer education and training plan of the Ministry of Education, the national postgraduate project of building a high-level university and the first batch of new engineering research and practice projects of the Ministry of Education.
