Wuhan University originated in 1893. At the invitation of the Qing government, Zhang Zhidong, governor of Huguang, founded a school of self-improvement to train diplomats proficient in foreign languages. It was the first modern college in modern China. Through inheritance and evolution, 1924 merged with National Wuchang University of Commerce, Hubei Medical University, Hubei Legislative College, Hubei College of Arts and Sciences, and private Wuchang Zhonghua University to form National Wuchang Sun Yat-sen University. 1928 was named National Wuhan University, and 1949 is even more current. ?
