On June 29th, 20 16, the Ministry of Education announced that some 985 project documents were invalid, and said that it would start a new plan for the construction of higher education in the new era, and incorporate the plans of "985 project", "21project", "innovation platform for dominant disciplines" and "construction of key disciplines with characteristics" into "building a world-class university".
The 985 Project has played an important role in the overall strength development of Chinese mainland University. The scientific research strength and international influence of a number of outstanding universities have been significantly improved, and the level of higher education has been improved.
At the same time, however, university funds, excellent teachers and project resources are concentrated in the 985 Project School. Because some universities or disciplines with good strength are not selected, there are problems such as "difficulty in recruiting students", "difficulty in introducing teachers" and "difficulty in applying for campus construction and project funds".
There are many non-academic factors, such as regional balance, ethnic policy, industry care policy and so on, when choosing universities to enter the 985 Project. Moreover, the 985 project did not add new schools or eliminate unqualified schools, which solidified the identity and hurt the competition and performance consciousness among universities.
