China's blue calico has a long history and colorful techniques, which were clearly recorded in the Western Zhou Dynasty. The phrase "green, take from blue, for blue" in Gou Zi's "Persuasion" is a philosophical statement that I feel that blue calico is refined and summarized. Folk blue calico is spread all over the country. Folk blue dyeing techniques in different regions have been passed down from generation to generation, and the ingenious craftsmanship and colorful patterns express people's hopes for a better life. It contains profound national traditional thoughts and cultural connotations, and blue calico is an important part of traditional folk crafts in China.
Wuxi has always had fertile land, abundant products, convenient transportation and developed agriculture and weaving, and is known as the land of plenty and silk weaving. In the Song Dynasty, it became a world-famous "cloth wharf". Until the middle of last century, there were as many as 30 dyehouses in Wuxi. It can be said that Wuxi is an important producing area of China blue calico. Blue calico is an important material for Wuxi's economic development and a precious material for local folk art.
Nowadays, with the development of society and the popularization of high technology, blue calico, a folk craft full of the essence of local culture, is gradually disappearing and becoming a "living fossil". It is the unshirkable responsibility of every Chinese descendant to rescue these living folk cultural heritages, protect and preserve the precious cultural wealth created by working people, explore and study folk traditional culture and art, and carry forward and develop the excellent spirit of the Chinese nation. People of insight in society are needed to devote themselves to this cause. In this respect, Mr. Lu Ruixing and the folk blue calico museum he founded set an example for us.
The blue calico objects and production tools preserved and displayed by Wuxi Folk Blue Calico Museum are rich in materials, orderly arranged and highly observable. They not only provide the best evidence for Wuxi's highly developed folk weaving and dyeing history, but also provide valuable material for the general public, including experts and scholars, to understand the history of Chinese blue prints, to be familiar with traditional folk crafts, to study China's traditional handicrafts, and to educate the general public, especially young people, to love their motherland, hometown and national culture.
Wuxi Folk Blue Printed Cloth Museum will play an active role in creating a cultural Wuxi, rescuing and protecting intangible cultural heritage and developing folk museums with its unique display form.
