The School of Design is a secondary college under Yunnan Art College. Arts and Crafts Specialty was established in 1984, and Arts and Crafts Department was established in 1986, and 1999 was renamed as Art Design Department. In 2002, the School of Design was formally established.

In the early days of running a school, the scale was small. Since the adjustment and development of environmental art and decoration, a relatively complete art design teaching system has been established. At present, the School of Design has three undergraduate majors (art design, animation, art design) and three higher vocational majors (advertising art design, ceramic production, computer art design), among which the undergraduate major of art design has six professional directions (environmental art design, visual communication design, costume art design, computer art design, folk arts and crafts and tourism commodity design, public art design, etc.). ); It is the most comprehensive, earliest and most powerful undergraduate design department in Yunnan Province. By September, 2004, there were more than 20 full-time undergraduate and junior college students 1 120, and it became a secondary college with a considerable school scale, focusing on undergraduate education and promoting higher vocational education. The setting of undergraduate, junior college and professional direction basically includes all professional disciplines of art and design required by the current social and economic development. The School of Design will, as always, adapt to the development needs of the times, especially to the development goal of establishing Yunnan as a major province of national culture and tourism, and adjust and develop professional disciplines in a timely manner.

With the expansion of the school scale, the School of Design actively promotes various teaching reform measures. We have made unremitting efforts and explorations in teaching management, revision of teaching syllabus, discipline construction, construction of teaching staff, improvement of curriculum standards, strengthening practical teaching and highlighting characteristic education. Design practice, scientific research and design creation have achieved fruitful results and won many national and provincial awards. He has published more than ten monographs and many papers in national and provincial journals. The faculty of the School of Design has also expanded accordingly, with 37 teachers, including 16 with the title of associate professor or above, forming a strong and dynamic professional faculty with young and middle-aged people as the main body.

After years of accumulation, the teaching infrastructure of the School of Design has been greatly improved, and the equipment configuration is relatively complete, which greatly improves the teaching efficiency and quality and basically meets the scientific and technological requirements of modern art design education. In recent years, with the strong support of the Provincial Department of Education and the College, the School of Design has invested a lot of money to improve the design teaching facilities. At present, it has more than 200 PC computers for design teaching, animation workstation teaching laboratory, numerical control technology laboratory, ceramic teaching laboratory, sculpture teaching laboratory, weaving and dyeing technology teaching laboratory, wood technology teaching laboratory and metal technology teaching laboratory, becoming the first art design undergraduate college in Southwest China to introduce the world's most advanced Apple G5 teaching laboratory.

The School of Design has been running for more than 20 years and has trained a large number of art and design talents for the society. With the deepening of educational system reform, the college will constantly adjust the course content and teaching system, highlight quality education, emphasize the combination of theoretical knowledge and practical ability, pay attention to the adaptation of teaching content to social needs, and gradually improve the teaching reforms such as credit system and flexible academic system.
