Beichen District is a municipal district under the jurisdiction of Tianjin. Beichen is one of the four districts around Tianjin, located in the northern part of the central city, formerly known as the northern suburb. The total area of the jurisdiction is 478.48 square kilometers. Beichen was a retreat at sea in ancient times. From Jinyuan to Ming and Qing dynasties, it runs through the North Canal waterway and the land Jinghua Avenue. It is the traffic artery for transporting grain from the south to the north and goods from the north to the south, and is known as the royal granary. Modern Beichen, revolutionary pioneer An, mountaineering hero, educators Zhang Boling, Wen Shilin, sports stars Mu Chengkuan and Mu Xiangxiong all grew up in Beichen District, which is also the hometown of the Prime Minister. The name of Beichen comes from the Analects of Confucius: "Governing the country by virtue is like Beichen living in his place, and all the stars share it." The name of this area means a bright star in the north of Tianjin.
