I want to change my major and study industrial design abroad.
American industrial design major is an interdisciplinary subject combining artistic innovation with engineering discipline. This paper mainly studies the basic theory and skills of industrial product art design and the engineering technical basis of industrial product structure and function design. Generally speaking, students majoring in this major need to have a solid foundation in natural science and a good foundation in humanities, arts and social sciences.

Some basic knowledge fields involved in industrial design specialty include industrial design engineering foundation, design expression foundation, design theory, modeling design foundation, engineering materials, ergonomics, design materials and processing, computer-aided design, market economy, enterprise management and so on. After systematic study, the students of this major have the preliminary ability of new product research and development, strong experimental skills, hands-on ability, artistic appreciation and creativity.

American industrial design majors award many degrees, ranging from fine arts to arts and sciences. According to the disciplines of colleges and universities, there are 23 industrial design majors in American industrial engineering courses, 9 of which are in the School of Design, 2 in the School of Architecture, 6 in the Academy of Fine Arts and 8 under the School of Engineering. Nearly 40% of industrial design majors have no or almost no connection with art disciplines. Because the American education system encourages each major to develop its own teaching characteristics, the curriculum of each industrial design major is different. Especially in the proportion of industrial design courses to basic education courses, there are great differences among schools. The high is 75/25, and the low is only 20 /80. The average value is 56/44. Generally speaking, the proportion of specialized courses has a downward trend. It can be seen that most industrial engineering majors are more inclined to engineering, so applying for industrial engineering majors in American universities requires applicants to have a strong engineering background. At this point, students still have an advantage.

Due to the different historical backgrounds and professional characteristics of various institutions, even the same industrial design major has different emphasis. For example, art center college of design's leading major is automobile design, while Cranbrook School of Design focuses on furniture design, while North Carolina State University School of Design focuses on industrial design. Therefore, students can systematically check the areas of concern of relevant schools before applying, and then choose the school that suits them according to their own interests and tendencies.
