Dongguan City University is a full-time private undergraduate college sponsored by Guangdong Hongfa Investment Group Co., Ltd. and approved by the Ministry of Education of People's Republic of China (PRC) (China). The school is an independent college approved by the Ministry of Education of People's Republic of China (PRC) in June 2004.

In April 2009, Dongguan University of Technology cooperated with Guangdong Hongfa Investment Group Co., Ltd.; In 20021year, approved by the Ministry of Education of People's Republic of China (PRC) (PRC), it was transformed into an independent private undergraduate college and renamed as Dongguan City University.
