Notes on Woolfolk's Educational Psychology (8) —— Encouragement and Punishment
1. What are rewards and punishments?

Reward and punishment are often used in teachers' education and teaching. Psychologically speaking, reward is a positive feedback to human behavior; Punishment is negative feedback to people.

There are many forms of rewards and punishments, which can be material or spiritual. Even a look, an action and an expression can express reward or punishment. When people are rewarded, they will have a positive emotional experience, and people hope to get this experience again. So rewards can strengthen the motivation of being rewarded and make the rewarded behavior happen again. The punishment is just the opposite. When people are punished, they will have negative emotional experiences, and people don't want to repeat this experience. Therefore, punishment can negatively strengthen the motivation to be punished, thus inhibiting the behavior to be punished.

1. Reward and punishment have a decisive influence on the formation and change of students' attitudes and behaviors.

The direction of the reward is very clear, telling you that it is right to do so. The direction of punishment is not clear. Punishment tells students what not to do, but not what they should do. Therefore, punishment is only twice the result with half the effort, and there must be positive guidance for students along with punishment. Punishment is just chasing, and reward is guiding promotion.

2. Teachers establish the corresponding relationship of "behavior-result" in students' minds through rewards and punishments. Through rewards and punishments, students can cultivate a very important belief: be responsible for their actions! Therefore, the evaluation of teacher education and teaching should be strict, open and transparent, fair and just.

3, the role of reward

The positive effects of rewards are: meeting the demand and generating positive emotions; Make people self-esteem, self-confidence, self-improvement, make people noble; Make people experience the joy of success, make students give full play to their potential and pursue new goals; It is conducive to establishing a good relationship between teachers and students. Rewards also have negative effects: too many rewards make students rely on rewards and weaken or disintegrate their internal motivation.

4, the role of punishment

The positive effect of punishment is rapid and powerful, which sets an example for teachers and helps to establish their prestige. Therefore, punishment, as an important means of education, cannot be simply denied or cancelled. But punishment also has many negative effects:

(1) Punishment often causes negative emotions and frustration;

(2) Improper punishment will lead to destructive behavior;

(3) Too much punishment makes students feel afraid, which may lead to bad behaviors such as lying and cheating; Deception and lying are the products of interpersonal relationships. )

(4) Excessive punishment makes students resist and leads to confrontation between teachers and students;

(5) Improper punishment will reduce the internal punishment mechanism (of the punished person) and make the violator feel at ease;

(6) Punishment will hinder the development of students' intelligence and creative thinking;

Third, implement the principle of rewards and punishments.

1, rewards and punishments should be timely, and the educational effect of rewards and punishments will be greatly reduced after a long time.

2, reward and punishment standards should be consistent, to avoid fluky psychology, to avoid unfairness leading to students' confusion or dissatisfaction.

3, the implementation of rewards and punishments must explain the reasons, strengthen the education orientation.

4, rewards and punishments should be commensurate with the behavior results.

5, reward and punishment methods should be appropriate. Reward should choose the way that students are willing to accept; Punishment should express a measure that you don't want but have to do, and it is accompanied by giving students help.
