Guan Shanyue is one of the representatives of Lingnan School of Painting and a famous art educator. In his artistic career of more than half a century, he has been adhering to the artistic ideas of "pen and ink should keep pace with the times" and "eclectic Chinese and Western, blending ancient and modern" advocated by Gao, the founder of Lingnan Painting School, and has always run through his creative practice, life practice and educational practice. He devoted himself to the inheritance, innovation and development of traditional techniques, and insisted on going deep into life to create sketches. His works are a model of the perfect combination of distinctive spirit of the times and personal artistic skills. He is good at landscape flowers, especially painting plums, and is known as "the first person to paint plums today". His "Plum Blossom" is a collection of poems, books and paintings, and it has always been a hot spot at home and abroad. It is said that the painter had a soft spot for plum blossoms in his early years. His father loved planting plum blossoms, Yongmei and painting plum blossoms, and was influenced by his father since childhood. The plum blossoms in his works are full of flowers and branches, or branches like iron, which are varied. There are colorful red plums, elegant snow scenes, hazy and soft moon plums, interwoven old plums, cinnabar plums, sentimental plums and rain plums with different expressions ... In short, both Mo Mei and Hong Mei show the realm of "iron bones proud of ice and snow, fragrance permeating the soul", which embodies the painter's pursuit of eternal truth, goodness and beauty and lofty artistic realm.

Guan Shanyue's 1973 work "Qiao Buzheng Chun" is one of his representative works. In the upper left corner of the picture, the inscription reads: "Beauty does not strive for spring. 1973, painted by Guan Shanyue. " On the right side of the name, there is a white seal "Guan Shanyue Seal". The ancients painted plums mainly in ink and wash, with Gushan Chu Shi as the boundary, simple and elegant; And Hua Tiegan, the plum blossom of Guanjia, is full of iron. This painting "Joe Don't Fight for Spring" is full of lush foliage and red flowers, and it climbs straight into the sky, which is quite contemporary. Close-up and full composition, strong colors and vigorous brushstrokes, on the whole, set off aggressive momentum and galloping rhythm, showing indomitable spirit of struggle, which is contrary to the image of a gentleman painted by the ancients and the feminine temperament of innocent and lovely women. The theme of the work is taken from a sentence in Chairman Mao's "Bu Operator" that "Joe does not strive for spring, but only reports spring". It can be seen that the painter's plum blossom theme is the kind of revolutionary heroism full of challenges. Delicate red is a symbol of China revolution and the spiritual destination of revolutionary heroism. The overwhelming, dense and high-flying momentum intuitively showed the surging political situation at that time-"Joe" was inspiring and "Red" was inspiring! Hongmei decorated the cold of early spring with its unique Leng Yan, showing us the changes of spring, seasons and the future of our motherland. It is a witness to the time series changes in nature, and it is also a warrior who overcomes the ice and snow and "cold ling alone". At this moment, it is better to appreciate the character and tolerance of revolutionary heroism than to "enjoy plum blossoms".

It is worth mentioning that the author gives full play to the artistic language skills that are good at creating an overall atmosphere. The "mountain-like" full composition and passionate cinnabar red effectively highlight the plum blossom spirit. In terms of pen and ink techniques, the meaning of seal script is written in branches, plum blossom has no bones, charm is seen in dignity, and freshness is seen in old spicy. Cinnabar is a flower, and the method of burning ink makes the picture form a very strong contrast, thus highlighting the strength and level of pen and ink. When painting, the painter's brush often drags on the side and moves his wrist with his arm, which seems to use the whole body's strength to make the picture have richer changes in vision and rhythm. The overall picture is full and heavy, bright in color, magnificent and full of energy. The connotation and implication have been fully expanded and deepened, and the overbearing composition and unparalleled brushwork have broken the classic mode of always advocating tenderness and delicacy. Although the traditional plum blossom painting does not have such a grand system and such a sharp and expansive aesthetic character, it is an expansion of traditional Chinese painting and the result of Lingnan painting school advocating "pen and ink keep pace with the times". In the critical period of innovation and development of Chinese painting in the 20th century, Guan Shanyue was indeed an indispensable figure. Therefore, Guan Shanyue Art Museum was established in Shenzhen to promote the artistic spirit of Shenzhen.
