Compulsory education in Shanghai implements the May 4th academic system.
Xinhua News Agency Starting from the new semester this year, Shanghai has fully implemented the "May 4th Academic System" in the nine-year compulsory education stage, that is, five years of primary school and four years of junior high school, replacing the "June 3rd Academic System" of six years of primary school and three years of junior high school. According to the new academic system, junior high school will implement a four-year system. The four grades are Grade Six, Grade Seven, Grade Eight and Grade Nine. The original "sixth grade primary school" was cancelled.
After the "May 4th Academic System" is fully implemented, primary school students who have completed five years of study will be issued with primary school graduation certificates if they pass the subject examinations; Junior high school students who have completed their nine-year studies and passed the subject examinations will be issued with junior high school graduation certificates.
Experts from Shanghai Academy of Educational Sciences pointed out that the biggest advantage of implementing the May 4th educational system is that it helps to reduce students' excessive study burden and psychological pressure in junior high school. Under the "63" educational system, three years in junior high school is too short, and students have just graduated from primary school, and the first year is basically in the adaptation period to the junior high school education mode and environment;
From grade one to grade three, they will face graduation and further studies, with only the transition from grade two to grade one. Once students can't keep up, they often have no time to adjust and it is difficult to continue their studies.
The early development of minors is another important reason why the May 4th Movement replaced the June 3rd Movement. In recent years, due to the improvement of living standards and the influence of urban culture, the physical and mental development of minors in Shanghai is generally "precocious", and most sixth-grade students are actually teenagers. The study and living environment in colleges and universities is more conducive to their healthy growth.
