Mainly distributed in the western Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean, they like the sea areas with good water quality and rich aquatic plants, and regularly float out of the sea for air exchange. Because female dugong occasionally has the habit of nursing her young in the water, dugong is often mistaken for a "mermaid". Since 4000 years ago, humans have been hunting dugong, eating meat to extract oil, making bones and making leather. So far, the number of dugong is extremely rare.
Manatees usually live in shallow seas and estuaries, and only a few species inhabit rivers, which can control algae flooding.
