According to Hanshu, he is simple in nature, indifferent to fame and fortune, and devoted himself to reading, so he is knowledgeable and famous for teaching The Book of Songs. At that time, people called him a Zou Lu scholar.
Characters and deeds During the period of Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty, Dong Zhongshu's idea of "ousting a hundred schools of thought and respecting Confucianism alone" was adopted, and a doctor of the Five Classics was established to vigorously advocate Confucianism, while Wei Xian took Confucian Classics as an official. During the Western Han Dynasty, there were many schools of Confucian classics and a strong academic atmosphere. Shangshu is divided into two schools: Gao and Jing, and Shangshu is different from Ouyang Xiu and Xiahou. Duke Shen of Lu was good at managing poems, which spread to Duke Jiang of Xianqiu (now Yanzhou City) and reached its peak. Gong Jiang is Wei Xian's teacher. Xian inherited the research results of He Gonggong, and had a new explanation. The study of the Book of Songs has taken a step forward and formed its own characteristics, which is called Wei Xue in history.
Wei Xian's reputation is prominent, far and near. The court considered him a rare talent and recruited him as a doctor. Emperor Hanzhao worshipped him as a teacher and asked him to teach the Book of Songs. Soon, he was promoted to Dr. Guanglu, Zhan's and Dahonglu. Zhao died and had no children, so General Huo Guang discussed with his officials to commemorate Xuan Di. When Emperor Xuandi first ascended the throne, Wei Xian was named as the Hou of the Pass and enjoyed the food city because of his participation in the discussion of Anzong Temple. At this time, he was appointed as the Shaofu of Changxin Palace (the official home of the Empress Dowager, and Changxin Palace was the name of the palace where the Empress Dowager lived), because he was the teacher of Emperor Zhao and was highly respected.
Three years after Xuan Di ascended the throne (7 1 year BC), Wei Xian was over seventy years old. When Cai Yi, the prime minister, left office, Xuan Di ordered him to succeed him and named him Hou Fuyang, a food city with 700 families. After five years as prime minister, Wei Xian wrote to ask for retirement in the first year of Xuan Di (67 BC). Xuan Di thought he was too old and tired, so he was allowed to resign and gave him 100 Jin of gold. A few years later, Wei Xian died, and he also wrote a letter to posthumous title "Festival Hou", which shows how highly he was valued by the emperor.
Wang Bo and other Wei Xian had four sons, and the eldest son Wei Fangshan was ordered to go to bed early. The second son is Hongguan to Donghai County; Wei Shun, the third son, stayed at the father's grave in Zou County; Wei Xuancheng, the youngest son, was highly valued by the emperor and ranked as prime minister because of his outstanding talent. Therefore, there is a proverb in Zouxian County: "It is better to teach a child than to get gold."
Wei Xian was buried in his hometown (now the east bank of Xiwei Reservoir in Zoucheng City) after his death. On the eve of liberation, his grave was still recognizable and had been razed to the ground.
