Hunan University of Science and Technology, located in Xiangtan City, is one of the 100 national universities supported by the Hunan Provincial People's Government, the National Bureau of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, the former state administration of work safety and the 13th Five-Year Plan "Basic Capacity Building Project for Central and Western Universities", the "double-first-class" universities in Hunan Province, the "excellent" universities evaluated by the Ministry of Education, the "excellent engineer education and training plan" universities of the Ministry of Education, and the first batch of national universities with typical experience in innovation and entrepreneurship. It has the right to recommend outstanding undergraduate graduates to study for graduate students without taking the test, the qualification of "master students" and the right to recruit students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.

The history of running a school can be traced back to Xiangbei Institute of Architecture established in 1949. Xiangtan Institute of Technology was founded in 1978, formerly known as Xiangtan Coal Institute, and is an undergraduate college directly under the former Ministry of Coal Industry. 198 1 renamed Xiangtan Institute of Mining and Technology, 1997 renamed Xiangtan Institute of Technology. During the period of 1998, the central and local governments jointly established a system with Hunan Province as the main management. Xiangtan Teachers College was founded in 1958, formerly known as Xiangtan Teachers College. 1985 was upgraded to an undergraduate college and renamed Xiangtan Teachers College. In 2003, Xiangtan Institute of Technology and Xiangtan Teachers College merged to form Hunan University of Science and Technology.

As of April 2023, the school covers an area of 3,003.88 mu, with a building area of1163,400 square meters. There are 23 teaching colleges and continuing education colleges, international education colleges and Xiaoxiang College (independent colleges), offering 97 undergraduate majors; There are 3 post-doctoral research mobile stations, 8 first-level disciplines authorized by doctoral degrees, 30 first-level disciplines authorized by master's degrees, and professional master's degree authorized categories 17; 2,600 faculty members, including full-time teachers 1679; Xiaoxiang College has 32,557 full-time undergraduates, 5,943 graduate students and 5,604 students.
