According to the statistics of the Ministry of Labor and Personnel, the employment rate of English major graduates has been in the top 10 in all majors. Even though the employment of college students is generally depressed in recent years, the employment rate of English majors in most colleges and universities remains above 90%, and the employment prospects are optimistic. Most graduates can give full play to their foreign language advantages after they take up their jobs, and are valued and welcomed by schools, foreign affairs departments, companies and enterprises. With the further acceleration of China's economic development, the connection between China and the world will be strengthened, and English majors will continue to maintain good employment prospects for a long time.
English majors have more opportunities to go abroad besides employment. Moreover, if students have new interests during their study, they can easily transfer to other majors or take postgraduate courses in other majors on the basis of English majors.
According to a survey conducted by the Teaching Steering Committee of Foreign Language Majors in colleges and universities, the students trained by the traditional English major training program can no longer meet the needs of employers because they only have a single English skill, and the demand for single-type English graduates in the talent market is decreasing. Therefore, the training of English majors must turn to the training mode of compound talents in order to meet the needs of national construction and social development. In recent years, in the job market, enterprises tend to prefer English majors with science and engineering backgrounds, so on the basis of English majors, science and engineering English majors with large living space and good development prospects are differentiated. The employment situation of graduates majoring in English for Science and Technology is on the rise. In addition, with the increasing efforts of China's opening to the outside world, English learning has already moved from simple language exchange to diversification, and there is an increasing demand for advanced compound talents who are familiar with international business and proficient in English. In this case, in 2007, the enrollment direction of English major in our school was set as two directions: economic and trade and translation, and IT and scientific and technological translation.
