Zhang Guimei suffered misfortune. 1995, her husband died of stomach cancer. Subsequently, she applied to transfer from Dali to Huaping County, Lijiang City, a poor mountainous area to teach. But just a few months later, she was diagnosed with uterine fibroids. Zhang Guimei insisted on being ill for three months, and didn't live in the hospital until he sent his students to the examination room for the senior high school entrance examination.
