The new embassy consists of five buildings, each of which has its own functions: an 8-storey main office building, adjacent to which is a 3-storey atrium office building, a Marine Corps sentry post, a consular/visa office building and a multi-functional annex building. The new embassy is located in the third embassy district near Maliang River outside the northeast third ring road of the Forbidden City in Beijing. The modern architecture of the new embassy originates from the traditional China style. The buildings are separated from each other, but the paths covered by bamboo forests are connected with a series of landscape gardens or "outdoor rooms". The new embassy has three "communities" built according to China's urban gardens and courtyards: the consular/visa community at the end of the east, the commercial community in the middle and the public community at the end of the west. All communities are connected by gardens, courtyards, wooden bridges and lotus ponds.
