Southwest Forestry University is the only independent forestry undergraduate college in western China. It originated from 1938 Department of Forestry, Yunnan University, and was founded in 1958 Kunming Agriculture and Forestry College. 1973, the Forestry Department of Kunming Agriculture and Forestry College merged with Beijing Forestry College, which moved south to Kunming, to form Yunnan Forestry College. After Beijing Forestry College 1978 moved back to Beijing, the school was changed to Yunnan Forestry College, directly under the management of the Ministry of Forestry. 1983 was renamed Southwest Forestry College, which is one of the six regional forestry undergraduate colleges directly under the Ministry of Forestry.
