PETS is a multi-level English examination system, which is divided into five levels, and examines candidates' listening, language knowledge, reading, writing and speaking. There are two forms of each level test: written test and oral test, in which the written test includes listening test. The written test is divided into objective questions and subjective questions, and the answers must be completed on specific answer sheets and answer sheets. Candidates will have an oral test after completing the written test. The oral examination takes the form of face-to-face examination. Generally, two examiners conduct an oral test on two candidates at the same time. During the oral examination, an examiner is responsible for grading and does not participate in the conversation; Another examiner presided over the oral examination, talked with the candidates and gave the scores.
Among the five-level pets, 1 is the lowest and 5/is the highest. Full score of written test 100, 60 points qualified; The spoken part is full of 5 points and 3 points are qualified. The time and content requirements of the examination are as follows:
Level 1: PETS 1 is the initial level among the five levels. The written test lasts 90 minutes and the oral test lasts 3 minutes. The test requirements are slightly higher than the English level of junior high school graduates of nine-year compulsory education in China, and candidates should have a basic vocabulary of 1000 words.
Level 2: PETS2 is the middle and lower level of the five levels. The written test is 90 minutes and the oral test is 8 minutes. The examination requires candidates to have an English level equivalent to that of outstanding graduates of ordinary high schools in China, and to master 2,000 basic English words and related phrases.
The third level: PETS3 is the middle level among the five levels. Written test 120 minutes, oral test 10 minutes. The examination requires candidates to have a level equivalent to completing two years of public English study or self-taught English courses in Chinese universities and colleges, and to master 4000 basic English words and related phrases.
Level 4: PETS4 is the upper-middle level among the five levels. Written test 140 minutes, oral test 12 minutes. The examination requires candidates to have completed four years of public English study or self-taught English course in China University, and to master the vocabulary of 5,500 basic English words and related phrases.
Level 5: PETS5 is the highest of the five levels. Written test 140 minutes, oral test 15 minutes. The test requires candidates to have a level equivalent to two years' study of English major in China University, and to master 7,500 basic English words and related phrases.
Among them, the PETS5 test has officially replaced the original WSK(EPT) test, which is aimed at students who went abroad to study in public schools in September. 1999, the students who passed the PETS5 test have basically reached the English level needed for living, studying and scientific research in English-speaking countries. PETS5 consists of five parts. The written test score is 100, and the score of 60 is qualified, and the listening part must be answered correctly by more than 60%. The spoken part is full of 5 points and 3 points are qualified.
Listening comprehension: 35 minutes, 30 minutes. This part mainly examines the examinee's ability to understand the central idea, main details and judgment attitude of the listening article, which is divided into three parts. Part A Listen to a monologue or dialogue (500-600 words, recorded only once), and then do ten true or false questions); Problems; Part B: Listen to three monologues or dialogues (280-320 words each, only play the tape once), and then do ten multiple-choice questions. Part C Listen to a monologue or dialogue (700-800 words, played twice), and then complete the sentence or answer questions, totaling ten questions.
Language use: time15min, score10min. This part mainly examines the examinee's comprehensive application ability of English grammar, vocabulary and structure. The examination questions appear in the form of cloze. Candidates must fill in the appropriate words in the spaces at certain intervals in an article of 250-300 words, and there are 20 questions in the blanks.
Reading comprehension: 50 minutes, 35 minutes. This part examines the examinee's grasp of the central idea, overall structure and the ability to obtain information through reading after reading the article, which is divided into three parts. Part A requires candidates to read three articles (400-500 words each) and then make multiple-choice questions, totaling 15; Part b, the examinee reads an article of 750-850 words, and then chooses collocation questions, a total of five questions; In part C, candidates read an article of 750-850 words, and then choose collocation questions, totaling ten questions.
Writing: 40 minutes, 25 minutes. This part examines the written English expression ability of candidates, and requires candidates to write a short essay of not less than 250 words (excluding punctuation marks) on the theme or situational tips or questions. There are various types of articles, and candidates are required to write letters, scientific research papers, experimental reports, application materials and descriptive or explanatory articles related to their major.
Oral test: time 15 minutes, out of 5 points. PETS exam is taken twice a year, but the level of each exam may be different, some levels are taken twice a year, and some levels are only taken once a year. The details shall be subject to the notice of the local examination institution. Candidates can apply for the corresponding level according to their English level, but only one level at a time. The examination papers shall be reviewed by the examination institutions of all provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the Central Government), and the results shall be published within two months after being audited by the examination center of the Ministry of Education. Those who pass the oral and written tests will be awarded the Certificate of Public English Examination System by the Examination Center of the Ministry of Education. The examination center of the Ministry of Education plans to gradually replace the public English test in the self-study exam with PETS test in the future, so as to popularize English knowledge to the whole society and meet various social needs.
