The predecessor of Northeast Petroleum University is Northeast Petroleum Institute. Daqing Petroleum Institute is known as the "Whampoa Military Academy" in the petroleum industry. The heads of the three major groups in China, the president of CNOOC, the president of Sinopec and two vice presidents of PetroChina all graduated from this school.
