First, before entering school
1936, Ding Zhaozhong was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA. His parents had hoped that he would be born in China, but when his parents were on an academic visit in the United States, he was born ahead of time. Because of this little accident, Ding Zhaozhong became an American citizen. Two months after her birth, Ding Zhaozhong returned to China with her parents.
As the Republic of China was fighting against Japan, Ding Zhaozhong did not receive traditional education in his childhood until he was 12 years old, but he was mainly educated by his parents at home.
Second, the school stage.
During 1949, due to the civil war between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party, Ding Zhaozhong's family moved to Taiwan Province Province, entered Zhunanguo Primary School, and graduated from Datong Primary School in Taichung City. Later that year, he was admitted to the junior high school of Chenggong Middle School in Taipei. The following year, he transferred to junior high school of Jianguo Middle School in Taipei, and attended high school from 1952 to 1954.
In junior high school, he made outstanding achievements in the fields of mathematics and physics. In the high school graduation exam, he was walked into Taiwan Province Provincial Institute of Technology, but Ding Zhaozhong gave up walking and took the joint exam. Later, he failed the entrance examination and was admitted by department of mechanical engineering of Taiwan Province Provincial Institute of Technology.
Not long after entering school,1September, 956, Xuan left the provincial institute of technology on the grounds of disagreement with interests, and then entered the University of Michigan in the United States, thus officially entering colleges and universities to study engineering, mathematics and physics.
1959, with a bachelor's degree in mathematics and physics. 1962 received a doctorate in physics. In the process of studying, I met Kay Kuhne.
Third, after graduation.
After graduation, he decided to engage in research, so he chose a job with a lower salary in CERN, Geneva, Switzerland. A year later, he became a lecturer in the Physics Department of Columbia University, and transferred to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 65438 to 0967.
His research interests are mainly high-energy experimental particle physics, including quantum electrodynamics? (quantum electrodynamics), unified theory of weak current? (Electroweak Theory), Quantum Chromodynamics? (qunatum chromodynamics).
Since 1966, the experimental group led by Ding Zhaozhong has carried out a series of experiments on quantum electrodynamics and vector mesons, which not only deepened human understanding of vector mesons, but also confirmed the correctness of quantum electrodynamics.
1972-74, the team conducted experiments in Bruhaven National Laboratory and discovered the fourth quark. 1979 In cooperation with scientists such as Tang of Institute of High Energy, Chinese Academy of Sciences, gluons used to spread the force between quarks were discovered.
1974, a new composite particle, J/ψ meson, was discovered by Burton richter, a professor in Ding Zhaozhong and Stanford University in California, respectively. From 65438 to 0976, two professors won the Nobel Prize in Physics and the Lawrence Prize of the American government. He was the first scientist to speak in Chinese at the award ceremony. In his speech, he emphasized that experiments are as important as theoretical work.
Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) was first proposed by Dr. Ding Zhaozhong in 1995 and installed on the International Space Station. At present, we plan to cooperate with CERN and other institutions.

His father Ding studied at Guanghua University (now East China Normal University) and Jiaotong University in his early years. Because of the civil war between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party, he moved to Taiwan Province Province with the government of the Republic of China and became an engineering professor at the National Taiwan Province Provincial University. Mother Wang Juanying is a psychology professor.
He is the eldest son of his family. He has a younger brother and a younger sister named Ding and Ding respectively. The whole family has ROC nationality. When Ding Zhaozhong was interviewed by Qu Xiangdong, the host of China CCTV, he was asked whether his four brothers and sisters were named "Ding Zhaozu". He said cheerfully, "No, Ding Zhaoguo, because there is no such country, so he went to Taiwan Province Province!"
The name "Republic of China" is to commemorate my grandfather Wang Yicheng who died for the uprising of the Republic of China.
Ding Zhaozhong and his first wife Kay Kuhne got married in 1960. They have two daughters: Jenny and Amy.
He married Dr. Susan Carol Marks in 1985, and gave birth to his son Christopher in 1986.
Status and honor
Ding Zhaozhong is a member of american physical society, Italian Physical Society and European Physical Society, a foreign academician of China Academy of Sciences, a Pakistani Academy of Sciences and a Russian Academy of Sciences. He also received honorary doctorates from University of Michigan, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Columbia University, Moscow State University, Bologna University, University of Science and Technology of China and Hong Kong Baptist University, and is an honorary professor at Shanghai Jiaotong University.
In addition, he is a member of the Academic Committee of Institute of High Energy Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, a senior director and honorary professor of Fudan University, honorary president of Qufu Normal University, honorary president of Shandong Rizhao Vocational and Technical College, and an outstanding alumnus of National national cheng kung university (formerly Taiwan Province Provincial Institute of Technology).
Naming of J particles
There was a saying that his Chinese surname "Ding" was similar to the English letter "J", so he was named J auxiliary word. In fact, this is a misunderstanding.
The real meaning "J" stands for current and light in quantum mechanics. J particles are closely related to light and electricity, so they are named J particles.
