Nanjing University of Science and Technology (hereinafter referred to as "South Institute of Technology") is located in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province. It is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the People's Republic of China and jointly built by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Ministry of Education and the People's Government of Jiangsu Province. It is a national "double first-class" construction university and "21/engineering" and "985 engineering advantage discipline innovation platform".

Excellent engineer education and training program, national high-level university construction graduate program, new engineering research and practice project, national college students' innovation experiment program, national college students' cultural quality education base, national innovative talent training demonstration base, national international scientific and technological cooperation base, China government scholarship receiving institution for foreign students in China, national universities with typical experience in innovation and entrepreneurship, and the first batch of demonstration universities in China to deepen the reform of innovation and entrepreneurship education.

18 universities, such as the national innovation and entrepreneurship base for practical education in colleges and universities, the first batch of scientific and technological achievements transformation and technology transfer bases in colleges and universities, and the national pilot demonstration universities for patent work, were approved as national dual-innovation demonstration bases. The first batch of doctoral and master's degree awarding units in China are members of the Sino-Russian Engineering University Alliance, the University Alliance of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the B8 Collaborative Innovation Alliance and the CDIO Engineering Education Alliance, and are known as the "cradle of weapons technical talents".

The school was founded in 1953 by the Military Engineering College of China People's Liberation Army. After the development stages of Artillery Engineering College, East China Engineering College and East China Engineering College, it was renamed Nanjing University of Science and Technology on 1993. As of April 2023, the school has Nanjing Campus, Jiangyin Campus and Xuyi Campus (to be built), of which Nanjing Campus covers an area of 3,200 mu and Jiangyin Campus covers an area of 1 15 mu; 2 1 professional college, 2 independent colleges and 72 undergraduate majors;
