The school was formerly known as Liupanshan University, which was founded in 1975.
1978 With the approval of the State Council, Guyuan Teachers College was established on the basis of Liupanshan University.
1994 was renamed Guyuan Normal University.
In 2006, it was renamed Ningxia Normal University with the approval of the Ministry of Education and upgraded to an undergraduate college.
The school has two campuses, Guyan and Wen Yuan, with a total area of 927,907.2 square meters and a total construction area of 287,000 square meters, including 6,543,800 square meters for teaching administration and 63,800 square meters for student dormitory. The library has 997,800 Chinese and foreign paper books, 0.09 million electronic books, 9 Chinese databases and 2 foreign databases. Journal of Ningxia Normal University is open to the whole country and is the first "Top 100" social science journal in China.
