Chen Yidan: There are three problems in the education system.
Life is simple. If you make a choice, you won't look back.

Life is simple, don't look back when you make a decision.

Chen Yidan, the main founder of Tencent, has set up the world's largest single education award "One Dan Award", and each winner can get a bonus of HK$ 30 million. Since 2007, we have explored public and non-public schools in the compulsory education stage (schools maintain public nature and identity, and educational charitable foundations established by co-organizers are the main body of school management) and public welfare private universities in the higher education stage. From these practices, he found that there are three problems in the current education system. Chen Yidan shared his views on these issues in his speech at the 20 18 International Diploma Global Conference.

First of all, there is a gap between the traditional teaching mode and students' expectations. In the Internet age, the traditional teaching mode of teachers speaking and students listening is disintegrating. Chen Yidan said that we are entering the era of "post-figurative culture" that anthropologist margaret mead said, that is to say, in order for elders to learn from their peers in turn, it is necessary to change from the one-way flow of teachers' knowledge to two-way or even multi-directional communication. Teachers' duty is no longer to impart knowledge, but to create a learning atmosphere and guide students to learn independently.

Second, the current standard for assessing students is single, which does not meet the diversity and differences needed for talent training. Although there was a call for reform ten years ago, most schools still managed step by step from top to bottom. Primary schools, middle schools, universities and lower-level schools should be screened at different levels for the purpose of teaching.

Third, there is a gap between the education system and reality, and talent training is out of touch with social needs. Every major scientific and technological progress will affect the job market and indirectly bring reform pressure to the education system. For example, the development of artificial intelligence will affect taxi drivers, translators, editors and programmers, and bring pressure to the job market. Chen Yidan believes that the education system should be adjusted, and changes should be made in discipline construction, curriculum setting and student training programs.

The Yidan Prize Foundation also commissioned the Economist Intelligence Unit to interview 17 educators, including the former president of Yale University and the Minister of Education of New Zealand, and summed up six characteristics of students to be trained in future education: 1. Interdisciplinary ability, out of the current professional subdivision, with multi-field comprehensive skills; 2. Innovation and analytical ability. Imagination in the future is more important than mastering specific knowledge; 3. Entrepreneurial spirit, cultivating personality traits of taking risks and taking responsibility; 4. Master digital technology to make students adapt to the working environment of cooperation with machines in the future; 5. Leadership, teamwork, overall thinking and sense of mission; 6. Global vision and inclusive humanistic spirit enable students to have broader development potential.

Finally, Chen Yidan said that to promote the development of the education system, everyone in society needs to make contributions, but the most important thing is the school management leaders and national education policy makers, who are the key to different education subjects and different countries and regions.
