This school is the first institution of higher learning established by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China in China for Tibet after the peaceful liberation of Tibet. Formerly known as "Tibet Public School", it was established by the central government in 1957 and opened in September/958. It is the first institution of higher learning established by the CPC Central Committee for Tibet after the peaceful liberation of Tibet.

On April 30th, 1965, it was renamed "Tibet Institute for Nationalities" with the approval of the State Council. On April 28th, 20 15, it was renamed "Tibet University for Nationalities" with the approval of the Ministry of Education.

As of September 20 17, the school has two campuses, namely acropolis and Qin and Han dynasties, and has established a practical teaching base in Lhasa, with a campus area of 1 149 mu; There are 14 teaching units, 4 master's degree authorization points and 48 undergraduate majors. There are 977 faculty members and students 10042, including 537 graduate students and 50% Tibetan and other minority students.
