One: Creativity can only be cultivated, not taught.
The author told an interesting story that happened to his son. In other words, my talented son was sent to a painting class organized by the Academy of Fine Arts of Miami University. But in this class, I can't draw in the mine, and I don't want to go to school, because the teacher doesn't teach anything, only let the students doodle themselves. The author was very dissatisfied after learning the situation and immediately let his son quit the painting class of "misleading children". However, it was later discovered that American children are rich in imagination and creativity when drawing. They never ask "like", but "good", that is, is it unique? And China children judge whether a painting is good or not by "like it or not". Like a teacher's painting, like a physical object, without some innovative elements, they simply can't write it without reference.
It can be seen that China's education pays attention to the teaching of skills, and students can have strong agency ability according to the teacher's teaching, but students' personality and innovation can not be well developed. American education pays attention to students' initiative and personality, and pays attention to the cultivation of students' own innovation ability; The education in China pays attention to the process of "teaching" and "practicing", which cultivates students' skills well, while the education in the United States pays attention to the process of students' own practice and cultivates students' creativity efficiently.
Second, education without punishment is incomplete education.
It has always been thought that American education advocates freedom and personality development, and there are not too many rules and regulations to restrain children and let them develop freely, but this is not the case. When I read this book, I learned more about American education.
Huang Quanyu wrote in the book: In American schools, students are given a copy of school rules as soon as they enter the school gate, and all the rules and regulations of the school are recorded in great detail, which is a "dogma" that everyone must abide by. If a student violates any terms, he will be punished. There is no room for discussion. Students are well aware of this, so they obey this rule because they are afraid. For example, the teacher found that students were not disciplined in class, and for the first time, the teacher warned; The second time, stand outside the classroom 10 minutes; The third time, the teacher called the parents and was not allowed to go home until half an hour after school. This means that you will not be able to take the school bus, and you must be picked up by your parents. As a result, there is a popular saying in the United States: I am not afraid of anything, I am afraid that the teacher will call. Most importantly, American parents also understand and support the school's punishment measures.
On the contrary, our education has a lot of arbitrariness in managing students. Although the school also has school rules and class rules, it exists in name only. Students don't know what kind of punishment their actions will be, and schools and teachers also decide how to deal with them temporarily. Moreover, the popular practice in society now is to link all punishments with corporal punishment and corporal punishment in disguised form, which hurts students' self-esteem, which greatly reduces the standardized education in schools. The teacher is afraid to take care of it, and the school is afraid of an accident. Parents have been reporting the school to the relevant departments or news media, but they can only let it go.
In fact, "education" itself contains the factor of punishment. In the face of growing children, mistakes are inevitable, and being punished is also indispensable in the growing experience. If students make mistakes and violate discipline, it would be great if they can influence their children only by reasoning and action. The problem is that a small number of students don't buy this set at all, so we can't help them, so we have to let nature take its course. Imagine where these students will go in the future and who will discipline them. I believe everyone knows. So why did it develop like this? Of course, parents of children have unshirkable responsibilities, but we should also bear certain responsibilities. If our education can give it some punishment, it may save some students and reduce the burden for society. Therefore, it is essential to take scientific and effective punishment as a means to be truly responsible for students and fully reflect the educational function of schools.
The above two points are my deepest experience after reading. The difference between Chinese and American education stems from the differences in national conditions, cultural traditions and educational concepts between China and the United States. China has the national conditions of China, and American quality education may not work in China, so we don't need to copy the American model. What we need to do is to find a set of quality education that suits us according to China's national conditions and learn from foreign models.
