Content introduction:
This book is a model of participatory observation and research. By investigating the daily life of an elite high school in the United States, the author studies how elite consciousness and behavior are formed step by step in social interaction. Especially in the modern information society, knowledge is readily available. These young people have accepted the American concept of diligence and no longer compete for knowledge possession. They downplayed the importance of "noble taste" and "who do you know" and turned to care about the way one knows the world and the role one plays in it. This road to becoming an elite is very special and wonderfully combines contemporary cultural customs and classical values. Colleges like Sao Paulo and Ivy League look less and less like an exclusive yacht club, but more and more like a microcosm of our pluralistic society-a microcosm containing detailed and specific social rules.
