There are three kinds of people mentioned in the Harvard Red Book on General Education. One kind is people who have in-depth research in a certain field, called "I" talents; One kind is people who are involved in many disciplines and knowledge, but are not profound, which is called "X" talents, while the third kind advocated in the book is people who have a broad understanding of many disciplines and can study some fields in depth, which is called "T" talents.
The so-called "general knowledge" mentioned in this paper means to have a broad vision and knowledge, to be able to think interdisciplinary, and even to mention reading books of various types and themes. I agree with this result: broad vision and extensive knowledge.
Many times, people are used to summarizing laws and routines, but I always feel that some laws and routines summarized by people are not necessarily the essence of things. For example, just like the grammar of a language, which comes first, the language or the grammar. Of course, language comes first, right? Besides, if you are familiar with the grammar of a language, you may not be able to write in it. Like many successful books, being familiar with routines may not lead a good life.
What I want to say is that "T" talents are not the goal, but the result. We are not "generalists" for the sake of "generalists", and becoming "T" talents should not be our goal. Although this is summarized in the book, these concepts are only by-products of your practice.
The world is a discipline, which is governed by different disciplines for the purpose of focusing on research. Even now, the division of many disciplines is not very clear. The so-called interdisciplinary, I think, is just to restore their original relationship. Although there is no limit to knowledge, the reason behind exploring things is the innate nature of human beings. I think the so-called extensive knowledge comes from the exploration of many things known to human nature.
First, because life is limited and you know it is limited, you will choose one of them to meet your deep cognitive needs for something after reading a lot; Second, life is unique. In the process of experiencing life, no matter the chance or the inner attraction, you will always love one or two things and devote your life.
I think this is the reason behind the achievements of "T" talents. Any essence is also relative. In the process of exploring the mysteries of all things, there is no recent, only closer.
The reasons are discussed, and the results are distinguished. I also want to agree with the tool to realize the "T" type proposed in the book. The tools I am talking about are the ways to promote this result. I sum up the contents mentioned in the book as: thinking, discussion, practice and speech, and then I sum up these points as "output".
Thinking is the product of the brain's own output-input cycle, and discussion, practice and speech are stimulating the output and re-input of the human brain in various ways. I emphasize "output" because we usually get more knowledge through input, and relatively speaking, what our brain lacks in improving memory is the stimulation of output.
I am glad that I have found a book called General Education, which is concerned and recognized by many education experts. All disciplines should be unified at a certain height, "one family under the world", which is my understanding of subject knowledge.
